Slow Ageing Positively

The process of ageing is inevitable. The term ‘anti-ageing’ is something we never use because it can be misleading. Instead, our philosophy at Ekó botanicals is based on a belief in using the power of plants, ancient rituals, and science to slow the ageing process. An acceptance that when one season in our skin journey ends another beautiful season will begin, just like the seasons in nature.

How Skin Ages

A loss of both function and structural stability in skin proceeds unavoidably as we age. Intrinsically aging proceeds at a genetically determined pace, primarily caused by the build-up of damaging products of cellular metabolism as well as an increasing biological aging of the cells. Estrogen levels strongly influence skin integrity in women as well; falling levels in midlife, therefore, produce premature aging as compared with similarly aged men. Extrinsically, free radical damage from environmental pollution and UV exposure add to the dermatological signs of aging.

The Power of Plants to help Slow Ageing in Maturing Skin

1. Hydrating

Maturing skin is less able to maintain hydration levels, leaving it more vulnerable to dehydration. Using products rich in humectants that attract and maintain skin hydration levels will slow ageing and improve skin plumpness. Nefertiti, Radiance Botanical Serum has Hyaluronic Acid which boosts hydration by 1000 times. It also contains Aloe Vera and Hibiscus plant extract two very potent humectants.

2. Moisturising

The moisture-retaining properties of our skin are mostly conferred by its glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content, which keep our skin looking full, soft, and hydrated. Ageing is associated with a reduction in collagen and elastin and reduced levels of some GAGs. This means the skin can no longer retain fluid as effectively. To boost skin's moisture, drink at least 2-3 liters of fluid every day.  Limit your intake of caffeine, alcohol, salty foods which increase fluid losses. Apply moisturizers morning and night, as they help to hold moisture in your skin. Use a gentle oil-based cleanser regularly rather than harsh chemical alternatives. Amina Ritual Cleansing Oil has rich plant nutrient oils like Camellia, Peach Tree, Lemon grass and Rose Geranium which are deeply nourishing, anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants.

3. Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the substances that fight the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are what lead to oxidative damage, and this damage plays a large part in making the skin look older. As we age, the antioxidants that are naturally present in our bodies slowly but surely peter out. This happens more quickly for cigarette smokers and people who experience a lot of sun exposure.

Vitamin E: Even though the human body doesn’t produce vitamin E, it is critically important to the beauty of the skin.

Vitamin C: Is essential to collagen synthesis. Lemon and Orange extracts in Makeda Botanical Radiance Oil rich in natural Vitamin C and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) boost smoothing and brightening.

Vitamin A – Retinol and products containing naturally occurring Vitamin A renew the skin and help combat the signs of aging.

Vitamin B – or Niacinamide helps unify skin tone, boost collagen production, and improves the function of the skin’s moisture barrier.

4. Exfoliation

Even after damage is done, there is much we can do to restore some of the qualities of our youthful skin. Gently removing the top layer of dead skin cells stimulate collagen production and cell renewal resulting in a reduction in fine lines and blotching. Papaya seed oil found in Makeda Botanical Radiance Oil contains natural papain a natural occurring enzyme which speeds up exfoliation and helps fade pigment scars.

Hi. O have noticed some spidery, fine veins on my cheeks. I’m almost 56 and don’t want to look ruddy! What would you advise me to use?
Thanks
