Algae for skin
As the largest organ in the human body, the skin has multiple functions of which one of the most important is the protection against various harmful stressors from pollution and UVR exposure. Skin ageing is related to the reduction of collagen production and decrease of several enzymatic activities, which degrade collagen production in the dermis and epidermis. Marine resources have been recognised for their biologically active substances. Among these, Marine algae are rich-sources of metabolites, which can be used to fight against oxidative stress and hence skin ageing. These metabolites include, among others, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), polysaccharides, sulphated polysaccharides, glucosyl glycerols, pigments, and polyphenols.
These minerals all work as co-factors in many enzymatic reactions such as protein synthesis and cell reproduction. Algae is responsible for replenishing lipids within the skin. Algae also works to enhance skin barrier function, as loss of moisture is a key component of skin ageing. By replenishing the skin's lipids, its natural moisture levels are restored, therefore minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the skin. Nefertiti Radiance serum contains rich nutrients from Red, Blue and Green algae.
